Full-time Prevention Assistant

The MENTOR Initiative is a “not for profit”, charitable, non-governmental organization devoted to reducing death and suffering from malaria in humanitarian crises. The MENTOR Initiative is currently providing ongoing emergency support to the most vulnerable communities in Liberia, Angola, Kenya, the Central African Republic, Southern Chad, South Sudan and Syria and Iraq.

The Prevention Assistant supports MENTORS technical team for effective implementation of Indoor Residual Spray, Health and Hygiene Promotion activities and Support for APEs as part of The MENTOR Initiative’s programme in resettlement sites and host communities in selected districts of Cabo Delgado Province and to contribute to all community liaison and monitoring & evaluation activities as required. The role will focus mainly at the community level.

Duty Station: Pemba field office with field visits in Secure Districts of Cabo Delgado Province –  Ancuabe, Balama, Chiure, Mecufi, Meluco, Metuge, Montepuez, Mueda, Namuno, Nangade, and Pemba.

Responsibilities:

The main responsibilities of this post include the following:

Indoor Residual Spray:

  • Participate as required in training and implementation of IRS campaigns, and ensure that all operators have appropriate safety and environmental and personal protection information available in appropriate local languages;
  • Organize the set-up of IRS stock, equipment and material in strategically convenient areas in the targeted area;
  • Ensure appropriate handling, storage and appropriate disposal of all IRS materials and equipment line with environmental protection guidelines;
  • Oversee the recruitment, contracting and training of IRS daily workers.

Larval Source Management and Hygiene Promotion:

  • Support senior coordinators to train field / community teams in Larval Source Management and Hygiene Promotion strategies, and the use of prevention tools;
  • Support and coach community teams to implement effective Larviciding;
  • Follow up at community level to monitor and encourage the long term adoption of good hygiene and environmental management practices in targeted groups;
  • Participate in and contribute to Larval Source Management planning and implementation, in conjunction with MoH and other local partners.

Health Promotion and Hygiene Promotion:

  • Support prevention and technical coordinators to train field / community teams in Health Promotion and Hygiene Promotion strategies, and the use of prevention tools;
  • Support and coach community teams to implement effective health and hygiene promotion interventions;
  • Follow up at community level to monitor and encourage the long term adoption of good health, hygiene and environmental management practices in targeted groups;
  • Participate in and contribute to Health and Hygiene Promotion planning and implementation, in conjunction with DPS/ and other local partners;
  • Work with partners to ensure a package of simple, clear and culturally appropriate IEC is provided to all beneficiaries of MENTOR activities;
  • Support IEC teams / community activists to reinforce the delivery of IEC materials and content to the community.

Support for APEs program:

  • Support the implementation of APES support program working jointly with the MoH to improve access to effective primary healthcare;
  • Participate and contribute to technical training and capacity building of APEs.

Monitoring & Evaluation:

  • Ensure the collection of relevant data from larval source management and hygiene promotion activities;
  • Provide regular update on activities in-line with MENTOR country team requirements;
  • Monitor the feasibility and acceptance of prevention interventions namely IRS, Health and hygiene promotion;
  • Assist in program monitoring & evaluation as required;
  • Assist in obtaining field related information for reports.

General:

  • Maintain regular communication with the line management and other MENTOR team members through emails and phone calls;
  • Ensure the collection of relevant administrative posts data from relevant districts and administrative post;
  • Any other activities/ duties required by the direct supervisor or any other MENTOR authority;
  • Ensure positive interaction and good relationships are built and maintained with communities and partner organizations in the operational area and government;
  • Strictly adhere to MENTOR´s code of conduct and safeguarding policies.
